One April day, Tom and I got together at Woodshed Studio to record for the afternoon. Tom and I played many gigs, including standards, in various configurations over the years and we always enjoyed doing that. We had also talked about playing standards and opening them up in such a way that we would try to get to the essence of the piece. We decided to select a tune and use only the suggested tempo, emotion, and feeling of it to create an improvised piece.
Before each track, we would select which standard we would keep in mind and then we just played.
What you hear on the recording is just how it evolved that day.
We are very happy with the results and hope to continue to explore this concept.
